Podcasting Essentials consists of five online modules and related skill-building activities, each broken into shorter video lessons that students complete at their own pace. Plan for about 30 to 40 hours in total. Assignments and hands-on projects in this podcasting course build toward your own podcast brand and strategic plan. Upon finishing, students earn a non-credit Certificate of Completion from NYU Tisch School of the Arts and Yellowbrick.

Map the podcasting ecosystem: its formats, platforms, audience behaviors, and the economics driving the industry. Students learn the difference between a podcast topic and a podcast concept, develop a listener persona, and analyze the competitive landscape. Drawing on NYU Tisch’s emphasis on cultivating individual creative voice, the module asks students to identify the experiences, expertise, and point of view that will shape their show’s identity.
Audio storytelling has its own rules and rhythms. Learn the architecture of an episode that holds a listener from cold open to kicker, the principles of writing for the ear, and the interview as both a research method and a performance. Students build an interview question structure, identify potential guests, and outline a pilot episode.
Work through production end to end: configuring a recording environment on any budget, selecting a microphone, applying gain staging and room acoustics, navigating a digital audio workstation, editing a multi-track session, and building sound design. Students also explore the rise of video podcasts and AI-assisted production tools, then record and edit a rough cut of episode one.
A podcast is not a podcast until it is published. Evaluate hosting platforms and RSS feeds, develop a complete brand identity, design cover art and thumbnails, craft a trailer, and build a pre-launch and launch-week strategy. Students think like a publisher and a marketer, then submit a finished Episode 1 and a full podcast brand package.
Study the business architecture of podcasting: host-read advertising, dynamic ad insertion, listener subscriptions, live events, merchandise, brand partnerships, and sponsorships, and which models fit each stage of audience growth. Students read podcast analytics, build community engagement, and produce a comprehensive 3-Year Podcast Strategic Plan.
