A Brooklyn girl with L.A. roots, April Walker is considered one of the pioneers of the streetwear industry. April’s entrepreneurial spirit got her in the groove as a teenager. Beginning with “Fashion in Effect” at 21, Walker planted her feet in the fashion world with her custom shop. She started working with everyone from MC Lyte to Aliyah, RUN-DMC, Shaquille O’Neal and Snoop Dogg.
Her drive was able to bring her brand to dominate in the urban menswear market to distribution deals and solid sales. Walker Wear helped create what we now know as streetwear and turn it into a multi-billion dollar industry. The First Woman of Streetwear, the Walker Wear brand was co-signed by some of the biggest entertainers in Hip Hop history. Product placement was a major key and Tupac and Notorious B.I.G. were just a few of the people spotted with Walker Wear gear on. Walker’s clients and collaborators included Universal, Motown, Russell Athletics, Champion, and Priority Records to name a few. Walker recently wrote a book, “Walkergems, Get Your A$% Off The Couch”, curated a Women in Streetwear exhibit in New York City, and was featured in “Fresh Dressed” and the award winning documentary, The Remix: Hip Hop x Fashion (2019).
